Cookie Policy

1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently and to provide information to website owners.
MugUp uses cookies and similar technologies (such as browser local storage) for one main purpose: keeping you signed in and remembering your preferences. We do not use advertising, retargeting, or cross-site tracking cookies.
2. Types of Cookies We Use
2.1 Essential Cookies
These cookies are necessary for the website to function properly and cannot be disabled. They include:
- Authentication Cookies: Keep you logged in to your account (set by Supabase, our authentication provider)
- Security Cookies: Protect against fraud during payment (set by Stripe on checkout pages)
2.2 Preferences (Local Storage)
We use browser local storage — a cookie-like technology — to remember choices you make, such as:
- Theme: Your light/dark mode preference
- Streak Display: Your current learning streak, so it can be shown without an extra network request
This data stays in your browser and is not used to track you across other websites.
3. Specific Cookies We Use
| Name | Purpose | Set By | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| sb-*-auth-token | Authentication session (keeps you logged in) | Supabase | Essential |
| __stripe_mid / __stripe_sid | Fraud prevention during checkout | Stripe | Essential |
| theme (local storage) | Remember light/dark mode preference | MugUp | Preference |
| streak (local storage) | Show your learning streak in the navbar | MugUp | Preference |
4. Third-Party Services
Some third-party services we rely on may set their own cookies or collect technical data:
4.1 Supabase
Our authentication and database provider uses cookies to manage user sessions and provide secure access to your account.
4.2 Stripe
Our payment processor may set cookies during the checkout process to ensure secure payment processing and fraud prevention.
4.3 Google Sign-In
If you choose to sign in with Google, Google's sign-in service may set cookies according to Google's privacy policy.
4.4 Sentry
We use Sentry for error monitoring so we can find and fix bugs. Sentry receives technical error reports; it does not set tracking cookies.
5. How to Manage Cookies
5.1 Browser Settings
Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can:
- Block all cookies
- Block third-party cookies only
- Delete existing cookies
- Set cookies to expire when you close your browser
- Receive notifications when cookies are set
5.2 Browser-Specific Instructions
Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies and site data
5.3 Impact of Disabling Cookies
Because we only use essential and preference cookies, disabling them has a direct impact: blocking authentication cookies will prevent you from logging in or staying logged in, and clearing local storage will reset your theme preference. There are no advertising or analytics cookies to opt out of.
6. Updates to This Cookie Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. We will notify you of any material changes by:
- Updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy
- Displaying a notice on our website
- Sending an email notification for significant changes
